There is a new Firmware available for the Canon EOS 40D since beginning of April. I was very eager to see what changed and had to update my Camera today.

The first thing I checked was the image zoom of a taken picture. In release 1.0.5 the image got unsharp afrer the 3rd or 4rd zoom level. This annoying bug seams to be gone now. The image looks sharp until the second last zoom level. Much better than before. Bravo Canon.

The Firmware is available ath the EOS 40D Dowlnoads Page.

Panorama

There are many stitching tools out there. But many of them are either complicated to handle ore produce unusable or bad results. I tried many of them. The absolute best I found is Autopano Pro from Kolor.

It has many very useful features like:

  • Automatic Panorama detection and alignment
  • Color Correction
  • HDR (High Dynamic Range) Feature
  • Batch rendering

any many more. On their homepage are many very nice how-to movies and examples to get an idea what all can be done with autopano.

The new version 1.4 works on MacOS, Linux and Windows. Which makes it usable everywhere.

Autopano is not really cheap, but definitely worth the money.

The Panorama above was stitched out of 16 Images made with a Canon 40D without a tripod.

The Film scanner arrived when we where on vacation (or Honeymoon if you like) on Wakatobi (SE Sulawesi, Indonesia). It waited on the post office for me to fetch it.
I made several initial Tests with the Nikon software the the one from Silverfast which I also ordered together with the scanner. The Handling of the Nikon one is much more comfortable but the color correction of silverfast with its film database is very nice. I had to Upgrade Silverfast twice during the last 3 Weeks until it was stable and did not crash after every new film strip. You will see scanned Pictures soon in the gallery.

On Wakatobi there where many photographers SLR-housings for their cameras. And I’m now on the look for one that fits my Canon 20D.
I’m still not sure which macro lens I like to buy. It should be one that I can use under and over water. the 50mm, 100mm or the EF-S 65mm ??

The decision process was quite short. I got a very good offer for an “Old” iMac G5 which is BTW faster than the new one …
Tech Specs: 2.0GHz G5, 1,5GB Ram, 160GB SATA HD this should be enough power for my iMove, Scanning and Photoshop tasks. Allready set up the most things yesterday during the day and evening and used it productively to design our mariage thanks card inlets in illustrator. It’s a rely fast beast compared to my 1GHz Powerbook. I’m quiet happy with my new acquisition.
